Abstract
In order to assess that insulin injection can prevent or decrease deglycogenation after portacaval transposition in the rat liver.
Lewis and Sprague Dawley rats, weighing 240 to 410gm were used for portacaval transposition and 70%, hepatectomy, and for both. Daily injection of insulin, Lente zinc suspension, was done with 10 units per kg of body eight for portacaval transposion group, and 5 units for hepatectomized rats, respectively.
Hepatic glycogen, DNA, and protein contents were analyzed in the each experimental group.
According to the results as shown in Table I and II, the following conclusion was made.
1. Even in normal rat, the insulin injection of such doses produced remarkable hepatic deglycogenation during 17 days.
2. Deglycogenation after portacaval transposition was prominent, which could not be prevented with insulin injection, and surprisingly became more severe after insulin injection. The portacaval transplantation group was followed up to postoperative 263 days.

3. Portacaval transposition suggests clinical applicability for glycogen storage disease.
4. The reason for the profound glycogen depletion with insulin injection should be investigated.
